BOIP 2030: A strategic vision for IP services and awareness across the Benelux

The Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (BOIP) has unveiled its new strategic plan, BOIP 2030, setting a clear course for the future of IP services, and trademarks in designs in particular, in the Benelux region. With a strong focus on service excellence, legal quality, and raising IP awareness, the plan aims to address the main concerns of businesses and legal professionals in the Benelux. BOIP Delivers, Connects and Commits are the three strategic themes that will guide the Benelux IP office's actions towards 2030. Developed in close collaboration with a broad network of stakeholders—including IP authorities, practitioners, legal experts, and business representatives—BOIP 2030 reflects the needs and expectations of the IP ecosystem.
Enhancing IP services with a customer-centric approach
BOIP 2030 introduces an ambitious approach to IP services. Taking customer- centricity as a point of departure, IP services should be designed to enhance efficiency, legal certainty, and accessibility for all users:
- High-quality legal and administrative services. BOIP is strengthening legal precision, reliability, and consistency across its processes. To ensure the highest quality standards, BOIP is implementing a continuous ISO-certified quality management process, inspiring confidence in the IP system for both legal practitioners and businesses.
- Customer-centric digital transformation. With simpler, more intuitive procedures and a commitment to plain-language communication, BOIP is making it easier for entrepreneurs, SMEs, and legal professionals to navigate IP protection. Enhanced digital tools will streamline services, improving both speed and accessibility.
Strengthening IP awareness and integration into business strategy
Despite its significance, IP is often overlooked in early-stage business planning. Currently, less than 10% of companies in the EU actively use IP protection. BOIP 2030 provides an important impetus to change this trend in the Benelux by making IP, particularly trademarks and designs, more visible and relevant to businesses: Bringing IP to the forefront of entrepreneurship with our network BOIP recognises that IP awareness is not the sole responsibility of one institution. It collaborates closely with partners across the IP ecosystem and beyond to ensure that more businesses—especially SMEs—understand the value of trademarks and designs in their business journey.
Call to action for IP authorities and IP professionals
As BOIP moves towards implementing BOIP 2030, collaboration with other IP authorities, IP professionals and business advisors will be essential in bringing these ambitions to life. They all play a key role in guiding businesses through the complexities of protection and enforcement—BOIP aims to work closely with its partners to support and amplify these efforts.
